The AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) industry was set up from the beginning as a dynamic, global, interconnected industry. Startups all over the world are designing and developing eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing) with support from various strategic partners. One of these startups claims to have developed India’s first electric air taxi, and its first big partnership is a collaboration with the Dubai-based Empire Aviation.

One of the most recent collaborations in the AAM world brings together an eVTOL development and manufacturing startup in India and a luxury aircraft charter operator in the UAE. It’s not uncommon for industry players from different parts of the world to join forces and target specific markets.

In this case, ePlane and Empire Aviation are casting a wide net, hoping to bring eVTOL mobility not only across India and the UAE, but as far as Thailand and Indonesia. Ultimately, the goal is “world domination,” commercially speaking, just as all eVTOL makers are aiming for global success.

ePlane is not a well-known name among eVTOL companies. It’s one of the new kids on the block, with big plans of commercializing India’s first all-electric air taxi. Founded in 2019 by Professor Satya Chakravarthy, the company is a startup that was incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras).

ePlane’s flagship aircraft is announced as a compact, efficient alternative for fast commuting. India is well-known for its traffic congestion, which makes it one of the best markets for launching alternative means of transportation. This eVTOL is expected to speed up regular commutes up to ten times, boasting a maximum speed of 200 kph (124 mph) coupled with a range of up to 110 km (68 miles). Initially piloted, the air taxi version is designed to gradually transition to full autonomous flight.

The ePlane aircraft will be available in both a passenger and a cargo configuration, with a maximum payload of 200 kg (440 lbs) and a two-passenger cabin. Like all eVTOLs, it promises added benefits such as reduced noise levels, lower operating costs, and sustainability.

Operating since 2007, Empire Aviation is able to support the Indian eVTOL startup with a wider aviation expertise and industry know-how. Like other similar partnerships, this one will focus on all the major elements involved in AAM operations, from regulatory aspects to infrastructure and fleet management.

ePlane’s flagship aircraft will operate across the targeted markets not just as a passenger-carrying air taxi but also in the sector of air ambulance service. Faster travel time is often essential in EMS operations, and eVTOLs, in general, are well-suited for this specific field. Versatility in terms of configuration is one of the most important attributes of many eVTOLs.

The Indian startup aims to kick off commercial flights as soon as next year while expanding its presence in other markets with the help of Empire Aviation.
